Amy Gowland

Senior Occupational Therapist

Pain Coach

My pain journey started when I was quite young, guiding my desire to work with persistent pain, as an Occupational Therapist. I grew up as an avid dancer, passionate for ballet, contemporary, jazz and tap, with several recurrent injuries occurring during my early teens, subsequently resulting in a persistent pain journey from then on.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) at Monash University, I have worked in acute inpatient and long-term rehabilitation psychiatric settings, as well as inpatient eating disorder clinics within the public health system. More recently, I have worked in the public health Pain Management Clinic, prior to transitioning into a full-time role at Evolving Pain in October 2022.

These experiences have provided me with the opportunity to appraise the individual biopsychosocial factors contributing to an individual’s presentation, guiding the implementation of assessments, interventions, and evaluations, in accordance with evidence-based practice. I thrive off recognising the unique nature of individuals and the impact their environment has on their pain presentation and psychological wellbeing.

I am trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and love to incorporate aspects of this into clinical practice. I have had the opportunity to learn off some inspiring individuals that have also contributed to my passion for pain and continued desire to learn.

The opportunity to work with patients in pain is a privilege and something I will never take for granted, you are your own person, and your journey is as unique as you are!
