What is ME/CFS?

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex, multisystem illness that significantly impacts daily function. The key hallmark of ME/CFS is post-exertional malaise (PEM)—a worsening of symptoms after minimal physical or mental exertion.

Common symptoms of ME/CFS include:
-
Severe fatigue that is not relieved by rest.
-
Post-exertional malaise (PEM)—a delayed worsening of symptoms after activity.
-
Cognitive dysfunction, often referred to as “brain fog.”
-
Unrefreshing sleep and disrupted sleep patterns.
-
Dizziness, pain, immune dysfunction, and hypersensitivities (light, sound, chemicals, food).

ME/CFS symptoms vary in severity, with some individuals housebound or bedbound. While there is no cure, careful management can improve symptoms, stability, and quality of life.
