What is CRPS?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that typically affects a limb after injury, surgery, or trauma. It is characterised by persistent, severe pain with features of sensitivity, swelling, or colour change. CRPS is a disorder of pain regulation, involving nervous system dysfunction and heightened sensitivity (often called central and peripheral sensitisation).

CRPS is diagnosed using the Budapest Criteria, which means doctors look for:

-
Ongoing pain that is greater than expected for the initial injury or cause
-
At least one symptom in four key areas:
-
Sensory: Increased sensitivity to touch or temperature changes
-
Vasomotor: Skin colour or temperature differences between limbs
-
Sudomotor/oedema: Swelling, changes in sweating patterns
-
Motor/trophic: Weakness, tremors, changes in nail or hair growth
-

Other common symptoms include stiffness, movement difficulties, and reduced function in the affected limb. Though CRPS is not life-threatening, it can significantly impact mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

At Evolving Pain, we understand the complexities of CRPS and the frustration it can bring.
Our physiotherapists and occupational therapists work with you to manage symptoms, improve function, and create a personalised plan that supports your lifestyle and goals.
