Elmie Hoevanaars
Physiotherapist
Pain Coach
My interest in neuroanatomy, psychology and pain was sparked at a young age under the guidance of my passionate physiotherapist mum. My eyes were opened to the world of pain alongside her work and my own experiences journeying with numerous family members wrestling with their own experience of persistent pain. From there, I knew this would be an area I would pursue once I graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from Monash University.
I have since completed further postgraduate studies to equip me to be a holistic, evidence-based and creative pain coach. This has opened many exciting doors including a position at the Royal Melbourne Hospital Pain Clinic where I have been privileged enough to work with complex pain conditions and learn from some of the best pain physicians in Victoria. I also worked as a senior community physiotherapist that provided clinician’s education regarding persistent pain management. This allowed me to see people in their ‘natural habitats’, helping me to better understand individual situations, and to be more creative in devising tailored pain management plans.
Outside of physiotherapy, I am a keen artist. My first love is painting, but I also dabble in other avenues like resin and polymer clay. I have loved leading community group art programs in the past, and continue to do so on a one on one basis. I think story telling is one of the most powerful tools we have for learning and understanding our world, so I have come to love video gaming and TV shows/movies. Apart from that, I love travelling, camping and the great outdoors!
