
The Feldenkrais Method
A somatic approach to chronic pain
What is the Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais Method was pioneered by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais an engineer, physicist, and martial artist who developed the system while working to heal his own debilitating knee injuries. Relying on his expert knowledge of gravity and the mechanics of motion, he developed a sequence of movements to help teach the mind and body easier, more efficient ways to move.

It is an evidence-based somatic education system that draws on neuroplasticity (the nervous system's ability to change, reorganise, and rewire itself) as one of its core principles. Through guided, gentle, mindful movement sequences and heightened sensory awareness, the nervous system learns to reorganise itself, adopting more efficient movement patterns and gradually inhibiting the inefficient neuromuscular habits that no longer serve it.

Feldenkrais operates through the nervous system rather than the tissue. It's framed as education, not repair. The method itself retrains the nervous system. For patients, this offers a gentle pathway toward improved self-regulation, reduced pain and tension, greater mobility, and a renewed sense of physical autonomy.

Where Feldenkrais fits:
Feldenkrais wasn't designed as a "fix the problem" method, it's explicitly about retraining how the nervous system organises movement. A few mechanisms overlap directly with pain science:

Low threat by design. Movements are micro, slow, and within a safe range. This avoids re-triggering the protective alarm, which is important because pushing through pain often reinforces sensitisation rather than resolving it.

Increasing movement options, not correcting "bad" movement.
Feldenkrais doesn't try to force a "correct" posture or pattern. It offers the nervous system more choices. Pain and injury often narrow movement repertoire (guarding, compensations). Increased variability can result in reduced strain on any single overused pattern.

Proprioceptive refinement.
Chronic pain is associated with a "smudging" of the brain's body map (seen in research on conditions like chronic back pain and CRPS). Feldenkrais's core tool directing careful attention to subtle differences in movement is essentially a proprioceptive re-mapping movement exploration.
Reducing unnecessary effort/bracing.
A lot of chronic pain involves excess habitual muscular guarding that's no longer serving a protective purpose. Feldenkrais explicitly works on finding movement with less effort, which can interrupt that guarding loop.

Working through the CNS, not the tissue.
Since Feldenkrais frames itself as nervous-system education rather than mechanical repair, it fits naturally with a pain model where the nervous system's interpretation matters as much as the tissue state.

Novelty and attention as inputs.
There's some evidence that novel sensorimotor experiences, delivered with focused attention, can shift cortical processing.. Feldenkrais lessons are built almost entirely around these unusual movement sequences, asking you to notice fine differences.

Who can benefit from Feldenkrais therapy?
Almost anyone can benefit from participating in Feldenkrais therapy. It may be especially helpful for people with complex chronic pain or injuries, a part history of trauma, the neurodivergent population, people with neurological conditions, those seeking personal growth and self-improvement, and older adults.
Ways to teach:
There are two paths any Feldenkrais Practitioner would use:

1 Awareness Through Movement Classes (ATM)
Awareness Through Movement classes involve guided movement lessons taught by a trained practitioner, usually in a group situation, which help people become more aware of their bodies and how they move.
A single class is typically 30-60 minutes. You won't experience typical post-exercise pain. Pushing through is not the objective.
2 Functional Integration (FI)
Functional Integration is a one-on-one, more intensive approach where the practitioner uses a hybrid approach of verbal guidance as well as gentle touch to facilitate learning. These guided subtle movements aim to connect dots within their nervous system assisting regulation and integration, aiming to improve overall quality of life. You stay clothed, usually lying on a low padded table.

The intent is the same as ATM: never exceed a threshold that would trigger guarding. If your system tenses up in response to a movement, that's information for the practitioner, not something to push past.

These sessions are more individualised, a practitioner might be specifically targeting a pattern relevant to your pain history (e.g. how you organise movement around a hip you've been protecting for years).
FAQs
Is Feldenkrais covered by Medicare, NDIS, or private health insurance?
Feldenkrais sessions with our physiotherapist may be claimable under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan, NDIS plans, or private health physiotherapy extras, depending on your policy and referral. We recommend checking with your fund or GP, or contacting our reception team to confirm what applies to you.

Does Feldenkrais hurt, and will I be sore afterwards?
No. Feldenkrais is deliberately gentle and low-threat movements stay within a comfortable range, so you shouldn't experience the kind of soreness you'd get from typical exercise. If a movement feels like it's triggering guarding or tension, that's information for your practitioner, not something to push through.

What's the difference between a group class (ATM) and a one-on-one session (FI)?
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) is a guided group class, where you're verbally guided through movement sequences. Functional Integration (FI) is a one-on-one session combining verbal guidance with gentle hands-on touch, tailored to your specific pain history and movement patterns.

How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. Some people notice shifts in awareness and ease after just one or two sessions, while others benefit from an ongoing series to build lasting change in movement habits. Your practitioner can advise on a suitable plan after your first session.

What should I wear or bring?
Comfortable, loose clothing you can move freely in. For Functional Integration sessions, you'll stay clothed and typically lie on a low padded table, so layers you can easily adjust are ideal.
